February 23: Honolulu - Second Day of Two-Day Port Call

This may be the face of some passengers who really wanted to be on Kauai today. It might be the face of a neighbor back home, thinking of us being in Hawaii while they were in the midst of getting over 34" of snow dropped on them within 24 hours.

To recap the itinerary change, today the ship was supposed to make a port call in Nawiliwili, Kauai. The day we were in Hilo, the captain announced that forecast winds had prompted authorities to close the port, so here we are, still in Honolulu.

To balance goofing off yesterday with some culture today, we caught a taxi to the Bishop Museum. It is a wonderful place full of interesting exhibits relating to the Pacific Islands.

I will leave it to the website link in the previous paragraph to describe the museum.

Pam & I did have a laugh at our own expense. Approaching the museum and while waiting to buy tickets, we kept wondering whether it had moved, since it didn't look anything like our memory of it. Pam asked the person at the counter. Since our last visit, the museum built a new welcome center that hides the historic building. Once we walked out the back of the center, memories meshed with reality again.

What awesome navigational skills they had to go such great distances accurately.

We took an Uber back to
Nieuw Amsterdam and settled in for the ship's departure at 5:00 PM.

Apparently, everyone was aboard early, because at 4:30 the ship cast off her lines, turned around, and steamed for open water. For once, I was hoping the ship would sail late. I wanted the sun to be lower in the sky for pictures of Honolulu and Diamond Head.

After a late dinner in the main dining room, we headed back to our stateroom.

Woe is us, we have to be ready to leave on a tour at 8:15 tomorrow morning.
